The Amprobe AT6010/AM530 features the AT-6010 600 V AC/DC Advanced Wire Tracer Kit and AM-530 True-RMS Auto/Manual Ranging Electrical Contractor Multimeter. With the AT-6010 Advanced Wire Tracer, it has never been easier and safer to locate Energized and De-energized wires, breakers and fuses. When the Transmitter is connected to the circuit, the Receiver easily detects the signal in the wires or cables behind walls, ceilings and floors. The Transmitter works on Energized and De-energized circuits up to 600 V AC/DC in Category I through Category III electrical environments, allowing for work directly on an energized circuit without the need to take equipment offline. The Transmitter also features high signal mode for general tracing and a loop mode designed specifically for locating shorts, as well as two optimal tracing frequencies that are automatically activated based on the detected voltage. The Amprobe AM-530 autoranging digital multimeter is the multimeter of choice for professional electrical contractors. The AM530 is a True-rms digital multimeter so it accurately measures voltage on systems affected by harmonics. With its full menu of digital multimeter features, you can use it to: measure and verify the presence of voltage before connecting new equipment or performing repairs; run new wiring; check continuity of electrical connections; identify blown fuses; troubleshoot motors or check transformers.

Why you need a True-RMS Reading Multimeter

True-RMS instruments are accurate on any AC waveform. There are two basic AC measuring systems. One is "average sensing, RMS indicating." This is the most common system because it is affordable and easy to manufacture. An instrument with this type of measuring system measures the average of a sine wave, and then multiplies it by 1.112, allowing the instrument to indicate RMS. This measuring system is only accurate on sine waves.

The second measuring method is called "RMS Sensing, RMS Indicating." An instrument with this type of measuring system computes the RMS value of the measured waveform (sine or otherwise). This is referred to as "True-RMS" reading. This measuring system is accurate for any waveform. When an average sensing instrument is used on a non-sinusoidal waveform, measurement accuracy could be off as much as 50%. Since you may not know what type of AC waveform you are measuring, a True-RMS instrument should be used whenever possible.
